State of Nature A, B, C
“The state of nature” is referred to by political philosophers as a hypothetical time before Government entered the scene, or a “primitive state.” Theorists like Thomas Aquinas, Montesquieu and others espouse a liberal versus libertarian view on such cultures. Our own “State of Nature and Primitive State” photograms are unencumbered with such theorizing but do homage to the French naive painter Henri Rousseau, known for his dreamlike jungle paintings, even though he never saw a jungle. He was inspired by visits to botanical gardens in Paris and was quoted as saying “When I go to the glass houses and see the strange plants of exotic lands it seems to me I enter into a dream.” Let’s hope our jungle photography takes you to another place where there is life without political theories and dreaming is most welcome.
